End of Year
The end of the school year is upon us, and summer vacation is about to begin. While most kids and teens look forward to vacation (or at least claim to ), the long summer vacation can be a very challenging time for everyone. Two months with no routine is a very long time. For many, the biggest challenge is boredom. How can we make the most out of summer vacation? It is very useful to sit with each kid, or teen, and to figure out goals for the vacation. I recommend to set goals in different areas: personal, altruistic, spiritual-if relevant and social.
Personal goals can include things you want to do but never have time for during the year, learning a new skill or subject, exercise or sports goals, introspection time with journaling, exploring new areas… Enhancing computer skills like blind typing or programming can be very useful for kids and teens. Learning a music instrument or art projects can also be very special.
Social goals and expectations are very useful to set up in advance. Working out arrangements with friends and deciding what is a good amount, helps relieve stress in the area, as well as encourage advance planning. While spontaneity is very important, it can be frustrating at times in the summer finding friends to meet up with.
Altruistic goals are also very important. Volunteering is fulfilling and important. Like all things, it often requires advanced planning or thought. Volunteering in a hospital or old age home is almost always an option. You can combine social goals as well, and try to arrange a group of friends to volunteer.
Finding work is especially important to youth. It’s a great time to make money and learn responsibility.
